132 Years of History

A love story built in wood and wonder, standing proudly on the shores of Lake Dora

A Mayor's Gift of Love

In 1893, John P. Donnelly — a successful businessman who would become Mount Dora's first mayor — built this magnificent home as a wedding gift for his beloved bride, Annie McDonald Stone. Nestled among towering oaks on the shores of Lake Dora, the house was designed to be a testament to their love and a beacon of elegance in the young city.

Designed by renowned architect George Franklin Barber, the home is a stunning example of Queen Anne and Stick-Eastlake architecture. Its distinctive Victorian features — ornate gingerbread trim, wraparound verandas, decorative spindle work, and asymmetrical facades — have earned it the beloved nickname "The Gingerbread House" and made it one of the most photographed buildings in all of Central Florida.

On April 4, 1975, the Donnelly House was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Reference #75000560), recognizing its significance in American architectural and cultural history. Today, it stands as one of Mount Dora's most treasured landmarks, lovingly preserved by Mount Dora Lodge No. 238 F&AM and the Friends of The Donnelly House non-profit organization.
